What exactly is GPS and how does it work?

Many people now use in-car satellite navigation systems, equipped with various functions that make it possible to enjoy safer and more relaxed driving. But what many people don’t really understand is the technology behind it. This is where GPS comes in…

We’ve all heard of GPS. It’s become the norm for smart phones and many cars now have built-in GPS systems. But if you’re a bit of a tech geek like us, you’ll want to really understand how the system works. Here is our break down of what GPS is, how it works, and why modern car drivers just can’t be without it.

GPS: what it stands for

GPS literally means ‘Global Positioning System’, and like the majority of technological innovations – from microwaves to drones – it was originally intended for military use, but it has managed to trickle down into consumer use. It was developed as a form of military navigation by the US Department of Defense to give submarines accurate positions for missile launches. Nowadays though, instead of for warfare, the majority of consumers will own a GPS device in their every day items – whether a sat nav, smart phone or portable GPS unit. In fact, it’s so common that every smartphone uses it to find its location, according to Digital Trends.

How it works

According to Physics.org, “GPS is a network of about 30 satellites orbiting the Earth at an altitude of 20,000 km”. And, no matter where you are on planet earth, there is always at least four GPS satellites in operation and visible at any one time.

It works through each of these satellites orbiting the earth, sending out microwave signals to receivers (e.g. your smart phone), using these signals to work out your exact position on the planet. It’s pretty accurate too – your precise location is worked out by calculating your distance from these four satellites and then ‘triangulates’ your exact position to the nearest few metres. Plus, once your position has been determined, your GPS unit can calculate other information, such as your speed, distance to destination, sunrise and sunset time and more.

Cool fact: These microwave signals travel at the speed of light and are intercepted by your GPS receiver. Just think about all the information being transmitted every time you use your smart phone or sat nav. Awesome stuff!

 Why is GPS so useful?

According to The Airforce Collaboratory, GPS is important in every aspect of our lives. In their explainer video below, they talk about how GPS works and what upgrades we can expect to see as the technology continues to improve:

It improves our road safety

GPS is said to improve your driving safety, when used wisely. Instead of reading a clunky map, you can simply listen to the directions your sat nav is giving you, whilst glancing at the on-screen map for visual cues. Knowing where you’re going and not being lost or distracted by maps and street signs, means you can better concentrate on the road ahead.

It also makes it easier and safer to drive at night, because you can preview the road ahead on your sat nav screen, being aware of upcoming turnings and ramps etc, which is useful on dark country roads where visibility is limited.

And finally, if you’re thinking of buying a sat-nav system or GPS-enabled unit for your car, then don’t forget about GPS Maps. GPS Maps are an essential add-on if you’re buying a GPS-enabled unit, such as a head unit. A touch screen head unit with GPS Navigator is one of the easiest and trendiest ways to upgrade your car with a GPS system, and the touch screen gives a smooth user experience.
